A Deer darts in front of your car and halts in the glow of your headlights.
Your heart pounds. Your brakes screech. You push back from the wheel.
Now Flip the switch.
It's just a table.
Box Cart
2009
As I remember it, the morning I happened upon Box Cart was classic summer. Hot sidewalk. Heavy air. I walked down the street and a vagrant woman approached. “Come with me,” she mumbled. Assuming she was not talking to herself, I followed. We made our way to an alley where she pointed at something. Intrigued, I moved closer. It was her cart. Surprisingly, it was not of the classic schizophrenic design, but something much different. This cart was piled high with stories that were strangely grouped into an orderly system. Her smile, as cobbled as the street, spoke, “Take care of it.” I looked at the cart and then turned back to her. She was gone.
